South Dakota's Missouri System Set For Banner Year05-01-08 South Dakota Walleye.jpg
By: Carl Madson | May 1, 2008 9:14AM

While walleye attract most of the notoriety and while Lake Oahe is known far and wide as one of the nation’s top walleye fishing destinations, Riis admits that there are other opportunities for anglers that are awfully good right now. “The salmon fishing on the lower end of Lake Oahe should be really good this year.” Also, Lake Sharpe and Frances Case both are top walleye producers but often get overshadowed by...

Night Movesuntitled222.JPG
Ron Anlauf | Aug 25, 2005 10:07PM

The fall period can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but if you’re a walleye angler it’s simply your  best shot for nailing a real trophy. If you’re serious about finding and catching big walleyes you absolutely  have to put the boat back in the water (or throw the waders on) at least one more time. There are too many big fish to be had and there’s no good reason for letting a golden opportunity like this slip by.

Walleye in Full Bloommug.JPG
Jason Mitchell | Aug 2, 2005 2:43PM

Algae blooms are a reality during the dog days of summer. Unsightly and unpleasant, many anglers pack their bags once the water warms up and turns green. The truth is however some of the best fishing of the year takes place under such conditions. Two patterns unfold for us each year during algae blooms and both these patterns involve using crankbaits to catch some of the biggest walleye we see each year.

Fall Walleyes Start the Feeding FrenzyFishONmug.JPG
John Campbell | Aug 2, 2005 10:19AM

As predator fish begin their fall feeding habits, their focus centers on large forage. Young of the year perch, cisco, river shiners and chubs,
along with other forage, such as frogs, crawfish and even their own off-spring will be targeted. Successful trophy hunters will match the
hatch, almost scientifically, at this time of year.

Beating the Heat for Big Summer Walleyesrickmug.JPG
Rick Olson | Jul 28, 2005 8:00PM

Scorching daytime temperatures and a mile high sun doesn't exactly sound like ideal conditions for catching numbers of big walleyes but it can be done, especially if you know where to look. To be successful anglers will have to give up on what had been productive just a few short weeks ago and get with a program more in tune with a walleye’s present needs.

Chasing Down June Walleyeaml2.JPG
Mark Leadens | Jul 27, 2005 11:04AM

June is prime time for chasing down hungry walleyes and is when some of the hottest action of the entire season takes place. It’s a time of the year that you really don’t want to miss because there are just too many good things going on.

Slip Bobbering Walleyeted.JPG
Ted Takasaki & Scott Richardson | Jul 1, 2005 6:07PM

Fall is big fish time, and while others resort to big jigs to catch them, Northwoods guide Greg Bohn sticks with the same tactic he uses all spring and summer long. There’s a reason he’s called “Mr. Slip Bobber ™.”

Walleye in the Summer5555.JPG
Jim Campbell | Jun 29, 2005 10:08PM

Livebait rigging or jigging the edges of prominent midlake structure captures the essence of fishing walleyes in lakes throughout the Midwest.  Fish like an edge.  Fish are not randomly scattered through any body of water, be it a pond, lake, large reservoir, stream, river, ocean, bay or slough.

Versatility – The Critical Elementjcccc.JPG
Ted Takasaki & Scott Richardson | Jun 9, 2005 6:25PM

One fishing season is over.  The next will soon begin.  Now’s a great
time to ask a very key question; How can I become a better fisherman?

Salmo Turning Heads in America27249-thumb.jpg
Peter Manoske | May 19, 2005 10:20PM

Salmo Lures are supposed to be that good. Time will tell if Salmo has what it takes to catch the anglers as good as they catch fish.

Lindy Rigs and Walleyes27507.jpg
Jason Mitchell | May 8, 2005 12:08PM

When the going gets tough, monofilament, weight and plain hook with good lively bait will always catch fish. Lindy Rigs were catching fish thirty years ago and will continue to catch fish another thirty years from now.

Weed Bound Walleyes by Ron Anlaufran.JPG
Ron Anlauf | Apr 24, 2005 4:47PM

The pattern includes weeds and lots of it, weeds that can attract and hold big schools of walleyes all summer long.

Multiple Casts to Key Spotserie eye.jpg
Mark Strand | Apr 17, 2005 6:18PM

Predator fish can be inspired to strike by specific movements of prey. This can change from day to day. When you find a key location, tempt fish with multiple triggers before moving on.

A few Tips on Walleyes Using Lead Headssheldon mug.JPG
Sheldon Meidinger | Apr 2, 2005 8:46AM

No secret that jigs are accountable for an awful lot of walleyes. We can fish a jig anywhere at anytime and catch walleye. Dare say that the modest lead head jig is the most versatile piece of tackle in the walleye anglers tackle box.

Making ‘Eye Contact this Spring jcccc.JPG
John Campbell | Mar 30, 2005 2:58PM

Shortly after ice-out, male walleyes in the 1 to 3 pound range will move into shallow spawning areas. The best spawning sites are large sloping shallow bars with a bottom composition of gravel. The aggressive male walleyes will hold over these areas for a month or more and feed aggressively during, before and after spawning.

Fishing Weedlines Well26300.jpeg
Mark Strand | Mar 27, 2005 6:58AM

Many, many predator fish are ‘ambush feeders,’ meaning that they choose to sit, making little movement to betray their presence, along some kind of edge where prey often moves by and can be pounced upon.

Early Season Erie Walleyes ro.JPG
by Rick Olson | Mar 15, 2005 10:17AM

The overall winner and undisputed champion is none other than Lake Erie and it still retains the “Best Fishery in the World” title. Even though things have changed and loading the boat with giant eye popping walleyes isn’t as easy as it used to be it’s still good, real good.

Early Walleyebogss.JPG
Ron Anlauf | Mar 7, 2005 6:01AM

Even early on in the walleye season patterns emerge that can produce incredible action, if only they are discovered. There are times when it seems like the deck is stacked against you but the pattern is there, if only you can find it.

Bruce "Doc" Samson | Jan 25, 2005 9:47PM

Remember that old song from childhood? Knick-knack paddywhack, give a dog a bone? Well, I’ve changed the words a bit for a valuable lesson to use when fishing riprap.

Head South for More Walleyesrow3.JPG
Rick Olson | Jan 23, 2005 11:20PM

If you develop an itch to get in some early season walleye action you can scratch it by looking for a warmer climate and taking a due south heading. There are plenty of opportunities for open water walleye

Going for the Goldra2.JPG
Ron Anlauf | Jan 16, 2005 7:19AM

Late season walleye fishing through the ice has it's rewards, though few step up and claim the prize. By late January, most anglers have given up and thrown in the towel.

Distinctive Profiles Lure PredatorsBait Shape2.JPG
Mark Strand | Jan 14, 2005 7:16PM

"I've seen it make all the difference in the world. Not every time, but fish definitely show a preference for certain shapes on a lot of days." explains Hank Steele, longtime Rapala Club Administrator
