Last night at Spiritwood lake, just before 10:00pm, my 7 year old daughter, Emily, landed a 9 pound 29 1/2 inch Walleye.  She caught it on a slip bobber and leech.  She made a perfect hook-set.  She hauled back on the rod like a pro - which was unusual for her - she isn't that good at setting the hook, but this time it was picture perfect.  I knew she had hooked a good fish when her drag started screaming.  I told her that it was up to her to fight the fish on her own and she was doing a good job until her long hair tangled up in the reel handle.  I couldn't get it untangled.  I had to take the handle off the reel, unwind her hair, then put it back together.  The fish was still on due to the great hook-set she made.  another couple minutes and I nettet the hog.  As soon as it was in the net, I declared it a whopper.  My son, Aaron, freaked out yelling and screaming and congratulating her.  He is 12 and he got his Master patch (3 whoppers of different species) a few weeks ago.  This was Emily's first one.  These kids of mine are going to drive me to bankruptcy mounting all thier fish.  What a nice "problem" to have.

Pics will be posted later.

That is awesome, you should be very proud. I don't remember being 7 but I'm sure I could barely keep some walleye on my fork at the dinner table let alone set a hook on a whopper like that.

Hope she didn't pull any hair out! Ouch

Congrats to you and the kids

Hey that's awesome!  Congrats!

Geez, no fair though, we catch 29 1/2 walleyes in Sakakawea and are lucky if they go 7 pounds!  In a few years, however, they might have a chance to go 8 or 9 pounds.  Better send a photo into the gallery with the fish and smile!  Always great capturing those first time moments!

The night before, she casted her line, set the hook and reeled in a 6 pound walleye.  The only fish we caught that night.  The night before that, she caught a nice 17 incher all on her own.  She did everything but but the hook (not a fan of leeches) which is pretty good for a 7 year old.  I did cast the line for her though when she got the 9 pounder.

Got some pics posted in my album from the camping trip this week.  Don't have the Big One up yet.  It is on a different media type and I am still working on figuring it out.

I think it is more like beginners luck.  My son and I always used to joke about the luck of the spongebob rod that she used to have.  It had no drag at all and wouldn't cast with any line heavier than 6 pound test.  She cought more fish on that rod.  If she wasn't fishing, my son and I would actually fight over the rod.  It seemed that 75% or more of our bites always came on that rod.  Of course we lost a lot of fish due to not having any drag.  For Christmas, I bought my daughter a new rod.  It is a cheap Firebird rod and reel, but I bought it for her because it is a full sized rod so she can learn to cast better - and because it is pink (she has a major thing for the color pink).  She catches even more fish now with the pink rod than she did with the spongebob rod.  I love it because it keeps her interested in the sport.  What more could a guy ask for?

Speaking of gifts that I have given her, I bought her a 22 for her birthday (pink of course).  We went out to shoot it and that is when I discovered that she lacks the ability to close one eye to shoot.  She cannot focus down the sights with both eyes open.  I did buy her an eye patch to use for now, and that does the trick, but is there any exercise or anything I can do to help her be able to close one eye?  I never had this problem with my son.

Awesome. I wished I could have seen the look on her face. I took my niece (10) two weeks ago and couldn't buy a bite for  her. Forgot about the white bass my buddy had told me about so felt pretty bummed. She still seemed to have fun though.
congrats to Emily!
